HATS are back. Broad-brimmed or bucket-shaped, furry or floppy, the humble beach cover-up has morphed into summer’s hottest accessory. Melanoma aside, the millinery on show in Milan for the 2005 spring-summer collections gives the perfect excuse to slap on a hat.
The crafty Miuccia Prada stuck sequins and pinned peacock plumes on to hats shaped like inverted flowerpots. Giorgio Armani paired business suits with conical satin skull caps. The Cancer Council will adore his vibrant Chinese coolie hats, shady as parasols. Elaborate head ornaments of twisted lace, glittering sequins and chiffon bougainvillea blooms might even tempt Hollywood’s red-carpet set.
Fur-trimmed slouchy cowboy hats at Roberto Cavalli, while Dolce & Gabbana’s fluffy (fake) leopardskin Akubras sat well with the menagerie of animal skins stitched into the clothing. Enormous satin sunhats flopped over the eyes at Valentino Roma, while Jil Sander opted for smaller canvas fishing hats and caps turned up at the back like sailor’s hats.
Even indoors, there’ll be no excuse to go bareheaded. Scarves wrapped around models’ foreheads at Emporio Armani had a touch of turban about them and Miu Miu’s girls wore pop-art plastic alice bands with their neat ponytails and two-tone plastic sunnies.
The headband heralds a comeback for naff and naive accessories. An op-shop’s worth of chunky plastic beads in lurid colours jangled down the catwalk at Emporio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. Prada pinned bright plastic brooches,Christian Louboutin Sale, shaped like teddy bears and aeroplanes, on to sleek suits and cut patent leather into loops forming child-like chains.
At Marni, jute belts tied with coloured stones and necklaces of leather strung with beads resembled kindergarten craft projects. In Burberry’s English country garden, spiders and flies crept on to cardigans as diamante brooches. Creepy crystal centipedes dangled from clip-on earrings at Furla.
Silver shone as the coolest metal for jewellery. It gleamed in the clanging bangles piled right up Naomi Campbell’s arms at Dolce & Gabbana, and in Christian louboutin’s tribal necklaces gracing Alek Wek’s sinuous neck. But gold and bronze burnished the season’s bags and shoes.
Gucci’s beautifully crafted handbags were covered with tiny dog-collar studs and eyelets, giving the impression of medieval armour.
Knobbly croc-skin adorned luscious velvet evening bags and tiny beads were sewn into animal-print patterns on roomy handbags.
